Information Filed in Pennsylvania
If a case is forwarded to the PA Court of Common Pleas following a preliminary hearing the district justice sends notice to the county clerk of courts who then notifies the District Attorney of the new criminal case. At this point, The District Attorney's Office files a document called "Information" with the clerk of courts. The Information is a formal document charging the defendant with the alleged criminal activity. It outlines the particular counts the offenses charged. Here, the District Attorney will review the criminal complaint and may exercise discretion and terminate the prosecution by declining to file an Information or by adding or deleting the original charges.
