FREE TIPS FOR DUI DEFENDANTS
- Everyone makes mistakes. Learn from this one.
-
- Provided no one got hurt or killed it could have been worse. Be grateful it is not worse.
- Focus on addressing the legal issues and moving forward.
- Make the most of the treatment and programs required.
- Never make the mistake of driving after drinking or ingesting drugs again. It puts people at serious risk. The penalties are also too punitive for repeat offenders and will negatively impact your life.
- Get organized and be prepared.
-
- Get a lawyer and trust their advice. Seeking Internet advice and/or talking to someone who previously was charged with a DUI is not productive. It will only confuse you. Every DUI case is different, and cases are treated differently depending on where they happen.
- Calendar your court dates and be early for court appearances. Court hearings can run long (we are all on the court’s time schedule) so please be prepared to be patient.
- Look like you’re ready for something especially important.
-
- Dress appropriately for court. You don’t have to wear a suite. If you own a suite, however, wear it. Business casual works as well. Jeans are generally acceptable. As a rule, shorts should be avoided. At least one court will not allow people to enter the courtroom wearing shorts. I suggest also avoiding t-shirts. Please do not wear t-shirts with messages (regardless of the meaning) and any clothing with references to alcohol.
- Be prepared to make important decisions.
-
- This is your case and it directly impacts your life. Only you can decide if you want to enter a diversion program or a guilty plea. Of course, it is a lawyer’s job to help you understand the issued and the impact of the decision. Ask your lawyer questions. Ask for explanations. Don’t be afraid to provide additional details or to ask for additional information.
- Promptly complete all requirements.
-
- Any court case will become more problematic by not timely completing what is ordered.
- Don’t apply for a diversion program if you do not think you can comply with all the terms and conditions. Doing so will waste your time and money and will make your situation worse.
